Proposed amendments to the Firearms Control Act

John's feedback and commentary on the firearms summit in response to the proposed amendments to the Firearms Control Act

Colleagues,

I wish to extend my sincere appreciation to all of you, those who made the effort to attend the firearms summit at parliament as well as those who remained behind and prayed for us and whose best wishes were with us. Thank you all.

I am cautiously optimistic about the summit. It certainly brought all of us together and there appeared to be unity in the ranks. We are privileged to be a diverse lot who have an affection for firearms in a diverse way, but our objectives appear to be the same. It is important that momentum be maintained. Whether the participation in the discussions and the interaction with other role players will pay dividends remain to be seen, but I have hope. Just don't believe that the "fight" is over, in fact it has hardly begun. From what I heard, many people have many ideas as to keep momentum. I trust this will come to fruition, since a debrief and discussions for an action-plan is necessary.

Despite negative media reporting I am glad to say that my telecon last night (about 20:20) with ANN7 went well and was balanced. I debated with Adele K this afternoon on a TV show on News24 - when it will be broadcast I do not know, but it might also be printed in Media24 newspapers. RSG intend doing a radio interview with me tomorrow morning after 8:00.

Travel safe, get out your defensive tool and ensure that it is not more than an arm's length from you (for two days most of us have been without it!), have a good single malt (are there bad ones?) and reflect slowly on the past two days, then contemplate what to do next and share it with us.

Kind regards

John
